Business: Warehousing for Textbook Publisher/Distributor Nature of Work or Scope and Results
The purpose of this study was to plan an entirely new warehouse to permit centralization of two present warehouse and distribution operations.
A significant amount of project data was collected through observations of the receipt, order picking, and shipping functions. The system layout and building configuration recommendations developed provided for transfer of operations by initially using current order picking methods in the new facility. As volume increases and the company's systems are further developed, the order picking system will be converted to use mechanized methods to provide increased capacity. This study was coordinated with an A/E firm that incorporated SCG's layout and building configuration requirements into design and build specifications.
Several years after facility construction, SCG designed a new double floor, carton flow pick system and conveyor system to help automate pick and pack operations.
